Paul Merson questions two of Manchester United’s summer signings

Arsenal legend-turned-pundit Paul Merson has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign the likes of Victor Lindelof and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer.

The Red Devils spent over £140m on the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic, Lindelof this summer, whilst Ibrahimovic re-joined the club on a one-year contract.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former Gunners star was unconvinced by Jose Mourinho’s decision to sign Lindelof, who has yet to make his Premier League for the Red Devils, he said: “I’m not convinced by Victor Lindelof at all, but Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are very, very good signings and that’s why I’m giving them such a high grade. They are two players that they needed and they will make a massive difference to that team. They look like a completely different team with those two players in it and they could be the players to win the Premier League for them.”

Meanwhile, Merson was also critical over United’s choice to re-sign Ibrahimovic as he is unsure where he would fit in the club’s setup. The big Swede was the Red Devils’ top scorer with 28 goals last term, but his campaign was ended early by a nasty cruciate ligament damage on his left leg.

Nevertheless, United have taken the chance on him on a one-year contract, although he would not be available for competitive action until the New Year. Mourinho is said to value Ibrahimovic’s experience greatly, and the veteran could find himself in the thick of things as the club head into the busy phase in the second half of the campaign.

The manager had hoped to bring in a new winger to his ranks before the transfer deadline, but unfortunately, he could not finalise a deal with Inter Milan, who were holding out for a minimum of £48m for Ivan Perisic.
