Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly decided to hand Ashley Young with the role of the club-captain with Antonio Valencia ending his association with the club. Valencia is scheduled to leave the Red Devils on a free transfer when his contract expires next month and Young seems to have got the nod for the captaincy after observing the role on numerous occasions during the 2018/19 campaign.

According to The Sun, Ole has decided to go with Young for the leadership duties with the expected departure of Valencia this summer. It is further added that Paul Pogba has only been afforded with the vice-captain role for the next campaign despite the fact that the midfielder stands the chance of being the captain for the long-term.

England international Ashley Young has reportedly penned a new contract to keep him at Manchester United until the conclusion of the 2019/20 season. The veteran’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the campaign but United have taken the option to extend his contract for another 12 months.

Shortly after the extension, interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about the fantastic attitude of the Englishman since his arrival at the club and said that his involvement could be crucial with several young players around the club, he told the club’s website: “Since I’ve come into the club, Ashley has been fantastic. His attitude and his experience around the place is vital for us because we have got a young team. We’ve got players that need some leaders in the dressing room and Ash is one of them so I’m delighted.”
