Villa and United also met at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round and it was the latter who progressed to the next round as hosts via a 1-0 win thanks to the strike from Scotland national team player Scott McTominay.

For the third game between the two teams in all competitions, they shared a four-goal thriller in what was a Premier League clash played at Villa Park.
