Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed that the club have taken the option to extend the contract of Ashley Young for another 12 months. The England international made the move to the Nerazzurri from Manchester United on a six-month deal in January with the option for another year, should he impress.
Young has certainly done so during his eight appearances for the Nerazzurri, where he has registered one goal and one assist and Ausilio has now confirmed that he will stay put with the club for the 2020/21 campaign. Meanwhile, the Italian admitted that the club will prolong the stay of United loanee Alexis Sanchez until the end of the campaign.
The Chile international has endured a stop-start season due to a lengthy ankle injury and he has been restricted to only 16 appearances for the club across all competitions. He has not sufficiently impressed with just one goal and three assists but Ausilio is counting on the attacker to show his value during the final phase of the Serie A and Europa League campaign.
He told Sky Sport Italia: “We have taken up the option for Young, it’s done. We want to keep everyone, including Alexis Sanchez. We are counting on him in the coming months. He was out injured for quite awhile, but he did well before that in matches against Barcelona and Sampdoria. I saw the Sanchez from his best campaigns in Udine and London. He didn’t have a lot of time, but he now has the chance to show his value and then we will make a decision on him.”
The Nerazzurri recently succumbed to a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Napoli in the Coppa Italia semi-final and that has definitely frustrated the club’s supporters, given they dominated both legs of the contest but failed to convert their chances. They will resume their league campaign with a home game against Sampdoria on Sunday. The club are currently nine points behind league leaders Juventus with a game in hand.
