Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly decided to hand Ashley Young with the role of the club-captain with Antonio Valencia ending his association with the club. Valencia is scheduled to leave the Red Devils on a free transfer when his contract expires next month and Young seems to have got the nod for the captaincy after observing the role on numerous occasions during the 2018/19 campaign.

According to The Sun, Ole has decided to go with Young for the leadership duties with the expected departure of Valencia this summer. It is further added that Paul Pogba has only been afforded with the vice-captain role for the next campaign despite the fact that the midfielder stands the chance of being the captain for the long-term.

Manchester United defender Ashley Young has said that a top-four challenge is not good enough for the Red Devils and they should be challenging for trophies instead. The Mancunian giants ended the current Premier League season in a disappointment as they finished sixth on the table and that has eluded them of Champions League football next season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Young said that the club need to be aiming for trophies rather than pushing for the top four and that itself remains a disappointment. He added that the recently concluded campaign has been a let-down with the team failing to make the Champions League places despite receiving help from the sides around them.

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has slammed Ashley Young following his average performance against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final. The England international was awarded with the right wing-back role for the game, but his showing was far from impressive as he struggled to make any inroads towards the Blaugrana defence.

Speaking after the game, Sutton was surprised with Young’s inclusion in the starting lineup against the Spanish champions and indicated that the Englishman is probably the worst captain and right-back in the club’s long history, he said: “Let’s get it right, he’s the worst ever United captain and the worst ever United right back.”

Ashley Young says that it is a major worry to witness players being attacked by supporters and he has called for more protection to the players in the wake of the recent incident involving Jack Grealish of Aston Villa. The Aston Villa player was attacked by a Birmingham fan, who had invaded on the pitch. Manchester United’s Chris Smalling almost encountered a similar incident in the recent match at the Emirates Stadium when a supporter ran onto the pitch and confronted the defender. The pitch invasion was in the aftermath of Arsenal scoring the second goal from the penalty spot through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Even though the perpetrators in both incidents have been arrested and they are likely to face stadium bans, defender Ashley Young says that he is worried to see frequent incidents happen in this regard. He has called for more stewards on the sidelines so that pitch invasion can be prevented at the start. Young was subjected to a lot of abuse when he made the switch from Watford to Aston Villa several years ago. Even though those abuses have since been forgotten, such incidents will give a lot of fear within Young, who is looking to extend his stay at Manchester United beyond the current campaign.

Talk SPORT pundit Danny Murphy has urged Manchester United to find a long-term replacement for Ashley Young in their ranks. The England international has been the undisputed choice on the right side of the defence this term but Murphy believes the club should move forward with the versatile player approaching the final stages of his professional career.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Murphy said that there is a gaping hole at Old Trafford with the ageing Young and the club should consider a move for Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he said: “I do think this lad’s that special. I think right now we are blessed in that area. This Wan-Bissaka, unfortunately for Palace fans, maybe they’ll keep him another year, it won’t do him any harm at all playing more games and getting more experience. There’s a gaping hole at Man Utd for a right-back. Ashley Young’s done brilliantly, but he’s 34.”
